"That is so gay" phrase. Great. I'd blame South Park for launching it internationally.

Pah. It's their opinions if they don't like them. It's their problem, not yours.

After hearing one of my classmates saying "Queen is gay" (I know, the sentence has no sense) I'm not surprised of anything, really. The only reason to hate them is not have listened enough to them...

Don't you almost feel sorry for the people today that have to put up with Britney Spears, Justin Trousersnake, the dime-a-dozen "rappers" and all the other soundalike bands/singers? There is no more originality, no more inspiration. It's all cranked out of a big money machine -- everyone's in it for what they can make, not what music they can make!
It used to be all about the music...once. Why else do bands like Queen have staying power and loyal fans who still listen to and buy their music in various forms, still attend fan club conventions and still spread the word on lists like this one??
Their music will be rediscovered for generations to come, and that fact makes me glad I'm still a fan after thirty-one years!

"Last year I had someone ask me if I had AIDS. When I replied, amused, "No...", they said "well why do you like Freddie Mercury then?" "

I've never heard such a stupid thing before! God, what does this person think with???

people did similar things to me...guess i didn't get ragged on as much being female...but i was accused of liking only "gay" things...especially since freddie and rocky horror pic show have always been 2 of my favorite obsessions...the thing that pissed me off the most was how my peers would ask me why can't i listen to NEW music...why all that old crap that wasn't any good...they'd tell me i wasn't born back then, and i need to act normal like everybody else and listen to whatever was on the pop charts i guess....but of course...never stopped listening to all my wonderful music...music is timeless...well GOOD music at least...Queen is timeless

I just use the violent approach.

Friend: "Say, wasn't Freddie Mercury g...."
Me: *PUNCH*
Friend: "...ood at Wembley"
Me: "Oh..yeah..really good. I'm a rapscallion!"

Same here... well, they don't ask me why I don't listen to new stuff but I always feel that they don't really understand my taste in music. I mean, you don't have to like the old stuff but you should at least appreciate it and show respect for all those older bands because they were the ones that influenced most of the great bands of today. This is where it all came from, the most original and most of all, the music back then was honest and real. 4 or 5 people got together and wrote and played themselves and nowadays half of the big ones out there get everything done for them. They're just there because they look good but they don't have a real talent.
And yes, I don't know any band that did music as timeless as Queen did. To me, they were just the most perfect band on this planet. Almost unreal.
I grew up listening to old stuff because my mum is also a big music fanatic and I guess I got that obsession from her.

There are a suprising number of young people who are into Queen. We've been starved of good music for so long now, this I think is the first generation ( apart from back when there was a kind of Beatles revival in the late 70's) to go back to 'old' music, and its actually become fashionable, let alone acceptable, as so many people are doing it. The result, I hope, will be the formation of groups who can produce 'new' music with the style and quality of the 'old'. You may say I'm a dreamer, but i'm not the only one. At the moment we're still stuck in the stages of having a small number of groups taking advantage of this 'retro-rock' fashion (which is not bad thing in itself, but won't last long), but gradually 'novelty' acts (and I am NOT including the Darkness under that label, as they seem to have the musical ability and dedication to their work to develop with each album and produce music with impressive origionality and range)will be filtered out and hopefully the 'yoof' of today will come to appreciate quality and authenticity. Increasingly, new acts mentioned in the little-heard mucical press are being adopted by the mainstream, and although at the moment they are getting attention for the wrong reasons (sadly people still allow themselves to be told what is good and what to buy, rather than deciding for themselves based upon personal taste, which has been the root casue for the blandness and inter-similarity of most of the 'current' acts, where they are not so much actually different from eachother in style but instead forced into 'categories'), hopefully more attention will be payed to bands for their music, and not how famous they already are, for whatever reason.
Was it just me, or was that one hell of a big long sentence?

Stupid people exist. We are just an exempt catergory...although there is the odd stupid fellow here.

Excellent post, Lisa.

"Some people (teenagers) here sometimes react in a similar way: "Queen, they were a bunch of gays" but then they calm down and always say "Queen was one of the best rock bands"."

Thank goodness for the Czech Republic. You won't see this happening in the States too often.

"I personally think that lesbian women are much more attractive than gay men."

Are you talking about womanly-looking ones, or the manly-looking ones? :)

"He once met a Queen fan who has never heard about "Stairway To Heaven"."

At least they weren't a fan of Britney Spears or Nickelback and hadn't heard of Stairway!

"Noone can find a real reason to hate Queen so they all point the fact that Freddie was gay."

In some cases you may be right, but far too many males are anti-gay because of an ego thing. If you like someone who's gay, your ignorant friends will probably think you're gay too.

"It's their opinions if they don't like them. It's their problem, not yours."

Sorry, I have to disagree. Teenagers make fun of other teenagers, and in their homophobic mindset, making fun of someone who likes a gay singer is a field day.
