Link doesn't work Pim :-/
After some reading on Brian's site about the surround mixes, I guess you won't get much in terms of isolated lead vocals after all. Seems the brilliant minds in charge decided to do basically 4.1 mixes and hardly utilize the center channel at all. *sigh*
I'm sure the mixes are no less fun and exciting, but I certainly don't agree with Mr. Shirley-Smith's reasoning for this. Seems a terrible waste to me.
Here's what I posted over at QOL:
I appreciate what Justin is saying.. but it's a case of him doing what he likes and justifying it in his own way. I don't happen to agree. This argument about the center being an almost cinema-exclusive tool... silly.
Why not make the music theatrical, why not have the vocal be the centerpiece? As he himself states, if you don't want the vocal in the center, simply adjust your receiver so that it sends the signal to the left & right. That would have been the way to go.. center it, as many would say it should be, and if someone doesn't like it, THEY can choose to send it to the other speakers. The way he's chosen removes the option of the user choosing their preference and simply says 'this is what I feel is right, so there!'
Imagine how cool it would be to hear a pure Freddie vocal track in one channel for the length of a song. That's one of the things I was looking forward to. Oh well.
You can achieve that with the FM video collection.
DF, I think you're forgetting that these mixes are made with Brian and Roger's help. That way, if they think it's wrong, they change it. JSS is only there to be mixing etc. Brian and Roger are the artists. They say whether they want it or not.
And if you listen to Play The Game (DVD-A), the center channel has Freddie's vox on its own. Didn't you know?
Btw, what happened to that DTS stripping page?
Peace,
Adam.
P.S. If it sounds good, what's the problem??
P_G: While some of them are surprisingly well isolated from other instruments, none have a purely vocal track on its own.
Adam, yes they had approval of the mixes, but ask yourself this question: Have they ever approved things that weren't exactly loved by the masses? LOL
I haven't heard any of these, neither the DVD-A or the DVDs since I don't have DTS. I only have DVD-V players and DD 5.1.
Anyone know where I can get a cheap stand-alone DTS decoder to plug into my existing receiver? It's got a 6-channel input panel, but also 2 spare digital ins.. coax & optical.
"Have they ever approved things that weren't exactly loved by the masses? LOL"
You mean, you don't like those DVD-A's?? I think everyone who has heard these in their 5.1 glory agrees that it adds a nice new perspective.
And the FM videos don't have isolated vocals because..? Don't know? Fred's solo album was deleted. There ain't much left of it.
Peace,
Adam.
Geez Adam, how many times do I have to say it: I have not heard any of the DTS mixes because I don't have DTS. Therefore I'm not saying I don't like them. I'm just not looking forward to them as much now that I've heard how they did MOST of them.
Here's what you wanted to know:
They use the center channel.
You can't judge them by the GVH1&2 dvds. I think those are watered down versions.
Peace,
Adam.
