I'm not sure why, but "I Want To Break Free" is my favorite Queen song, not just John song.
The original album version is quite weak IMO. It's just a cute little bouncy pop song, but when they extended & remixed it, brought out that Fred Mandel-played synth intro, the song just came alive, became beautiful.
I think those synth parts are very moving, they convey a longing, melancholy while the song remains lighthearted and fun. The one thing I wish was different is the 'guitar' solo, which seems to be synthesized and I lovingly refer to as the 'electro-fart solo' :) It's cute, but a real live guitar sound woulda been nicer.
And yet my favorite album is A Day At The Races, so I can't explain why, but I listen to IWTBF daily.

...excuse me if i'm late, but i think that "You And I" is great too...
I Love "You and I." It's a pretty song and Freddie's vocals are great on it. Then again, Freddie's vocals were great all of the time. :D
