"I always thought it was the fans that made bands famous. :P"
LOL, Adam.
I see Dragonzflame point, but IMHO he went a little too far in his assumptions.

Stupid tabloids...they have a vivid imagination, they always have their info wrong! How do they do that??
But it's good to see Brian angry with them again, it means he's OK ;))

Or perhaps SHE went a little too far in HER assumptions. ;-p
Certainly they could have gone about it better, but I still think he was being a tad rough on the reporter.
And I disagree that it's the fans who make a band famous - obviously they play their important roles but it's still the media who give them the exposure, positive or negative. A lot of people first hear about bands through the media.

Speaking of the media, why am I always the last one to hear about these things?

I find it enlightening that Brian is so accessible to fans and probably media too.. if they would go the proper route. It's amazing that we get to read what amounts to Brian's personal journal on an almost daily basis, and that it's relatively easy to get a fast personal reply from someone like him.
I think the tabloid scum 'press' there is going this route of invading his privacy on purpose.. they sneak around, take candid photos and confront him at the most inappropriate times on purpose so they can claim that they tried to contact him directly and then write their trash. It's a sick little game and they're only playing with themselves. Perhaps it's time they grow up and learn how to properly interact with intelligent adults.

"but I still think he was being a tad rough on the reporter."
Eh? Where in Brian's reply does he tell us what he actually did?
"And I disagree that it's the fans who make a band famous - obviously they play their important roles but it's still the media who give them the exposure, positive or negative. A lot of people first hear about bands through the media."
I became a fan of the band Yes back in 2000 through my brother and his friends. But in the last 4 years, I've never heard anything of these extremely talented individuals in the media. A couple of times on BBC4! But that was all.
And just because some bands feed off the media doesn't make them. What makes them is the love from the fans. Look at the Spice Girls. Nobody wants to know. Yet, the media frenzy they had surely brought about tons of fans. But where are they now? It's just not that simple.
Peace,
Adam.

I have never quite understood why some people don't see why "celebrities" get annoyed by having their privacy invaded. Sure, celebs use the press to their advantage for publicity etc, but I don't see why this should give the press carte blanc to invade the personal space of a celeb - or anyone who has exposure for any reason (i.e a famous doctor, lawyer etc).
There should be laws and the press should be made to make "appointments" via the celeb or the celeb's representatives. They should not be allowed to hang around outside houses waiting for a picture, or restaurants etc.
If I hung around outside Brian's house day after day looking to get a picture or whatever in a way that annoys him, I would expect him or take out an court order to prevent me. The concept of a stalker. Some press seem to me to be professional stalkers.
Of course some "celebs" engineer their own press encounters by leaking their movements, but in general, I think celebs would welcome some more laws to control the media.

You can try all you like to try and control what the media puts out but the issue of Freedom of Speech and Press comes up everytime. Brian is a celebrity and as a celebrity certain issues come up like being a public personality.
It's a sad fact that the media in the UK can be so brazen but then they are also brazen here in the US as well. As a freelance writer myself I have seen colleagues of mine who are in TV or newspapers/print media go a little far and feel quite comfortable about it.
The laws for "public" persons favor the media. Let's take an extreme case like the tragic death of Lady Diana, even then was the media held responsible, even slightly?
Celebrities today if they are unable to deal with the "goldfish" bowl like atmosphere usual result in case after case of libel and slander.
As a responsible writer myself, I feel journalism in its best and most creative form be it media or written word has suffered under the corporate take over of the industry.
Just like Music and TV, newspapers and other print media have stooped to an all-time low, even respected mags like Newsweek and Time have used shock tactics to get much needed circulation at the expense of decent and responsible journalism.
Somehow and quite ironically the musical Queen has put together with Ben Elton is unfortunately becoming true, I hope not to be around when this world becomes one big corporation where even free thinking is outlawed.
Be afraid celebs and non-celebs alike!!!

Excellent post Oberon, and a great idea. It probably wouldn't happen though, because the tabloids would lose a hell of a lot of money out of it - which brings me to my next point:
"they sneak around, take candid photos and confront him at the most inappropriate times on purpose so they can claim that they tried to contact him directly and then write their trash. It's a sick little game and they're only playing with themselves. Perhaps it's time they grow up and learn how to properly interact with intelligent adults."
Most people are sheep, and are interested in gossip, even if they know the information presented may not be the truth. The sales of tabloids show it. The lives of far too many people are empty to the point where celebrity gossip is the subject that excites them the most. As long as people buy crap, other people will keep manufacturing crap. That goes for a loooooooot of subjects in today's society.

I feel bound to point out that I, too, work in the media and would never dream of invading someone's privacy like that. I'd also liket o think of yself as a "responsible writer" - it's those who get to interview the person again, and it's lovely when people say nice things to you about something you've written about them.
