That depends who you mean by 'they'... the other members of the band or what?
Well, whoever you're referring to, my guess would be that he just told them... if it wasn't bloody obvious in the first place.

Well, back in the late 70's, Freddie, against the better judgment of the band, rented an airplane, and had a 3000 foot banner made saying just that. 'I, Freddie Mercury am GAY'. The plane flew around the world several times so all the people could see. He even enlisted the help of Santa Claus.

You're new so I'll be kind. Its just that this question comes up every month or so. It just pisses regulars off we are all fans of Queen and it matters not one jot that Freddie was gay/bi whatever.

I have understood that Freddie never admitted that he was gay. Of course you could guess, but not many knew for sure.

"They" found out on the Jazz tour. On Live Killers, there are three infamous beeps during Freddie's intro to Death on Two Legs where he says "this is a song about", then you hear the beeps. What he said that had to beeped out was "this is a song about deepthroating massive cocks. We call it Death on Two Legs (as the cocks in question where so big they were like legs, two legs in fact.) Of course the band couldn't let the general public know this so only them and the audience at the concert knew Freddie was gay as there was no internet to pass his comments along to the rest of the world. Glad to be of service.
