While so many people are shedding crocodile tears for Ronnie Raygun's untimely demise (at 93 years of age) Perhaps we ought to spare a thought for the thousands of brave allied and German soldiers who fought and died on the beaches of Normandy 60 years ago this very day.

fatty.

War is always a wretched affair.

I've turned and fled from more battles than I care to remember, so I know that I wouldn't have had the stomach to stand alongside these brave chaps, some of them no more than boys.

There's something incredibly stirring to know that when confronted by such overwhelming evil, the British peasant will tighten his belt, look it square in the eye and tackle it head on, be it for death or glory.

Aye, we owe 'em a great deal. But it could never be wholly repaid.

Let's hope we never see the like again in our time.

Abso-bloody-xactly. Well said Fatty. It bought a lump to my throat watching all the vets walking on the beaches again.

I don't need to see Saving Private Ryan to imagine the horrors they went through.
Guess who's back?

My Grandad landed on the beaches in June 1944 - not part of the initial assault though.

Like most veterans of WW2, he lived his post war years in quiet dignity. No bravado, no boasting of acts of heroism, just doing what was asked of him, not wanting to let his mates and his country down in their hour of need.

Fatty, that must be the post of the year.

Seems like people have forgotten that those brave soldiers gave their lives to save the world from the evil Nazi empire.

Meanwhile... what did Reagan do? Gave weapons to Osama Bin Laden and the fallen Taliban regime to fight the Russians in Afghanistan. Not to mention that they still received aid after the Russians left and used to money to put their own people under the gun while they planned the biggest terrorist attack in history.

Oh, and have we forgotten about all the weapons that Reagan sold to Saddam when we thought that he was the good guy and Khommeini was the antichrist.

Thanks a bunch, man...I find it sad that so little recognition is given to the veterans of most wars, sure we get a couple days off to "remember" but not many people actually do that; its kind of of silly if you think that there are very few people who are not related to a veteran of some war.
Bless the men who died to help give us what we have now.

Fatty, if I weren't doing the croc tears thing right now, I'd be dead. I'm in the most conservative area of this country. If you say "God" outside the church, they cut out your tongue and serve it in the grits.

But I completely agree. and good post, Dan.
