Let's answer this with a question.
We all know "Weird Al" Yankovic, right? He's covered numerous artists, from Michael Jackson to Coolio, from Spice Girls to Nirvana. He asks for permission to parody their songs, and if he is given the right to do so, the original artist(s) get royalties for it.
In this case, Freddie wrote WATC, but he has passed on, so the rest of the band, as well as the management, would have to give permission for William Hung to cover WATC. Although it will be bad if they did indeed let Hung cover it, if it sells, think of the royalties Brian and Roger would get. Remember, they own the song, so they get money either way.

Hmm...although William Hung is as bad as it gets when it comes to covering Queen, I still think Britney, Pink, and Beyonce killed WWRY. I mean, it's not a pop song, it is a rock anthem. So what if it helps sell Pepsi and copies of their albums? I don't care. I hate it no matter what.

Anyways, getting to the point, William Hung is seen by a large amount of people as some sort of an inspiration, which is possibly how his debut album got its name.
Unfortunately, they ("they" being the mindlessly desperate drones of the music industry) can't play this out for much longer. Soon people will tire of this wannabe pop star and reflect on how the hell FOX let this worthless soul desecrate and besmerch the good names of such artists as Ricky Martin, Freddie Mercury, and others. This man has not even one iota of real talent, not to mention no sex appeal, no place in this growing music industry, and, most importantly of all, no hope. Sure, 100,000 copies seems like a lot, but where's that gonna get you in the long run?
Compare that to the amount of albums sold by today's top stars. 100,000 copies is nothing. Queen alone stands as one of the top sellers in the UK and other portions of the world, with their Greatest Hits album spending over 200 weeks in the charts and going mega-platinum. Beat that, Willie!
The good thing is, his 15 minutes are almost up. With the new American Idol winner, Fantasia Barrino, another contest starting up within this year, and new rising musical acts appearing by the dozens, William Hung will soon be "Hung" out to dry.

Er...doesn't Freddie's Estate control his tracks. Otherwise, why would Robbie Williams have had to ask for it if Brian and Roger were involved? Was Roger involved in that one? I can't remember.
But Brian and Roger DO NOT get royalties for WATC.

I think Queen as a corporation own the rights to the music and dispense those royalties appropriately between the four of them (or three and Fred's estate).
Brian recently said that he tends not to stop people covering songs unless they do so in an offensive way. Now this might be offensive to music lovers, but I think he was talking about more tasteless - hang on a minute, this is tasteless isn't it? There's no negative adjective I can use which doesn't describe this prospective cover version - and I've never even heard the guy sing. The pictures were bad enough.
The point is, the Queen corporation could probably stop this, but they don't tend to (as some one said, there's money to be made!!!) And they probably can't be bothered to go through the legal process to do so. They've got musicals to produce.
And I personally don't think Robbie did too bad a job on WATC. Certainly equal to many of the performances at the tribute. He's not Freddie, but he has a lot of presence and charisma etc.

I was so sure I posted in this topic about Freddie's estate. Wonder where it went... Anyway, I'm pretty sure that Freddie's estate had to give permission for Robbie to cover WATC, even though Brian and Roger were involved with that one. Strange, huh?
