I guess because it's not usually the way that it is spelt. Well... I can't really back that up. I think it was Freddie Flinstone.
That or 'y' seems like a more logical ending to Fredd- than 'ie'. I made the mistake...accidentally and I make hell when my friends say 'Yeah, Freddie Mercury wasn't bad'

It's because "y" is the boy ending. Like Bobby. Tommy. Joey. Harry. Granted, not Eddie, but it works most of the time, so people default to it.
even if the person can't spell Freddie there's a point in this post though.
