I have just bought one and wondered if anyone can recommend a good piece of software for burning downloaded movies and copying DVD's

I recommend TMPEGenc DVD Author. It has a simple and reliable copy function.

DVDShrink is a free software to burn DVDs, it also compresses (shrinks) movie files to make them fit on a DVD. It's easy to use, too.
I do not want any google ads here.

I have a DVD burner: it's a Sony DRU-530A Dual Format burner, meaning it'll burn -R(W) and +R(W) DVD's, as well as CD's.

Richard-

Just emailed you. Thanks! :)

Along with YourValentine, I would also recommend Tmpgenc xpress 3.0 as some files need to be encoded or re-encoded before using DVD author.
Tmpgenc xpress has lots of new features like adjustments for colour, brightness, hue and saturation along with a host of others.

As for burning your own dvd collection for backup purposes, I would recommend you get dvd decrypter and use alongside dvd shrink for perfect but smaller sized dvd's

how good is DVD X Copy? I've heard its impressive. Has anyone used this?

If you mean DVD XCOPY PLATINUM?

Yes, it's a great program, but it also gives you the '321 STUDIOS' splash at the begining of the dvd.
If you're a total novice at burning then this would be the best option but personally I would prefer to use the programs already mentioned as they end up exactly the same as the original.

Hope this helps..
