Where is Univ of Cal - Berkley and Stanford? The list is so biased toward ivy league, eastern and private schools which are mostly liberal arts and law schools (talk about leeches of society). As far as I can see, only Northwestern and UAF Acad are not from the east coast. Universities of Illinois and Michigan are also conspiciously absent from the lists of academic achievement.

I prefer my school ratings from a source less blue-blooded and snooty.

Mind you, the largest density of great colleges are, in fact, in the EAST, and more specifically, the NORTHEAST. The aforementioned schools are listed as the TOP 20. Such is very INTERPRETIVE, as a GREATEST GUITARISTS list. If you had to make a top 20 guitarists list, and Slash would be 21st greatest, it is still obvious that comparatively they are all ABOUT EQUAL. However, sometimes you have to MAKE A CUT. As for BIASES, it seems you are VERY biased against liberal arts and law schools, so you are one to talk.

What? Well, because you want to use the guitarist analogy, this list is like creating a greatest guitarists of all time and including only guitarists from 1980+. The list is inaccurate and incomplete. Of course, as you said, lists are subjective and Mike's opinion is just as valid as yours.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions. I prefer opinions adverse mine, as agreement is not a good motor for progress (or interest)!

The list is not flawed in the way you propose, as there are no limiting factors such as "guitarist must be from the years of 1980 and on". Trends and limiting factors are different. As trends on the periodic table, the trends in this list work (i.e.eastern schools as the apex and nexus of higher education). Incomplete, yes. Inaccurate due to the inability to rank every college, yes as well. However, considering the limitations of the ability to list only 20 colleges, these lists are about as accurate as you can get.

It's a good thing that you like differing opinions becuase you've got one here.
You misunderstand.
I didn't say that a stipulation on the the greatest guitarists list was that all had to be from 1980+, I was inferring that if all guitarists just "happened to be" from 1980+ that the list was would be terribly askew.

The list would not be askew if the greatest guitarists just happened to be from that era. The greatest colleges are less open to opinion in the way guitar greats are. Slight nuances in interpretation there are, but none are so great as to massively effect this list. Sure you can add and remove a little here and there, but this is the basic essence of the greatest colleges of America. One can receive perhaps the most comprehensive idea of the 20 best colleges in this list than in any list anyone else has yet come up with.

Yeah, Cambridge and Oxford are world-renown and are generally on par with the Ivy League and other great colleges of the US. I'd love to see them some day.

What these lists rarely take into account are the strengths of individual programs within the University.

That is a brilliant point. That is why the best lists to look to are the ones dedicated to particular fields. For example, if you wanted to go to a great business school, you will always find the University of Pennsylvania and MIT on top, whereas they rarely receive such the credit on a comprehensive list as shown. This is why the aforementioned comprehensive lists are VERY POOR ways to choose your college.
