You should check out the backstage pics from the 1990 award ceremony. Those are even scarier. They're in the QZ archive here somewhere.

Hell, yes! those are horrible, really. I started to cry when I first saw them because I was so shocked!

It's very hard to look at those pictures. Especially because I see some where he looks so nervous and frightened. The man who was practically invincible on stage had ceased to be at that point. :-(
