to transfer HIV you need to exchange bodily fluid. my understanding of this (and am happy to be corrected) is that the anal/rectal passage is designed for waste to be ejected...there is no way for bodily fluid or any others into the body through this means - other than by cut/fissures

Oh for God's sake... He could have had a bad blood transfusion, he could have taken drugs from a tainted needle. Just because he was gay/bi/whatever the hell he was doesn't necessarily mean that he got it from anal sex. Granted, it is a possibility, but unless someone knows for a fact that it's true it's libel.
Look. The guy got HIV from having sex with a man that was HIV positive. That then turned in to AIDS in 1987. I'm not describing exactly what wouldve happened for him to get it.
