"We Are The World" was the American contribution. Queen were not invited to be part of the English song "Do They Know It's Christmas.." which was recorded only a few weeks after Queen broke the UN boycott and performed in South Africa. Why they were not invited is everybody's guess but they were definitely not on tour at the time.
Well, I think "We Are The World" was a song sang by American artists and "Do They Know It's Christmas Time" by Brits. So I don't see why Freddie should have been involved in "We Are The World". The question is why wasn't Queen involved in "Do They...", but it's been discussed on this forum before...

I think We Are The World was written by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson, not Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson as I think the thread poster wrote.

We Are The World was sh*t. Worst charity song ever and the U.K song was far, far superior. I've already said why Queen weren't invited in a previous topic about why Queen weren't in Band Aid. It's just like Americans to sing "We Are The World". They might be the richest country in the world, but they can't even look past a man in a frock.
Yeh it's crap! Very American, very Michael. I like MJ's songs, not all but most of em. This is just too pretentious for me. Do They Know is the limit i think, good lyrics, nice tune and great voices. Heal The World is a rip off. And i don't think Bob Geldof woz involved.

WATC actually is quite a complex song. Some of the chord changes alone make it absolutely stand out among most pop songs. No comparison to We Are The World.

A comparrison between the actual music (with WATC) was never intended. "We", for the most part, in both songs (Champs and World) is meant to be everyone in the world - at least that's the impression I got.
