My brother reckons that Spike Edney is "often referred to as the 5th member of Queen" is this true? And do you think that he deserves this title?

Because Freddie decided he prefered not to play the piano. So if you can't take the piano out of a song then you have to put someone in. And they obviously needed another guitar part for Hammer To Fall. Or else he wouldn't have played it. I think the 5th member of Queen's stage show would be more precise. But he did play one of their albums.
Nonsense - Spike Edney was just a musician for their mid-80s tours. Then you could also say that Fred Mandel was a Queen member in 1982.
I think Roy Thomas Baker, Mack, and David Richards could be considered as "the 5th member of Queen". Their contributions to songs were sometimes very important.

I saw an interview with Brian, I cant remember where but it was a few years back now, and he said that Spike was often referred to as the 5th member of Queen. Im pretty sure Ive got it on video somewhere. I'll have a gander for it.

5th member is used for nearly everyone. In November `75 Fred referred to John Reid as the 6th, because Roy Thomas Baker was the 5th.
The Red Special and The Deaky Amp were together as the 5th member of Queen.
Spike wasn't considered to be a fifth member of Queen BUT he often considered himself as the fifth member... it was the peak of his career so he was obviously very proud of it.
