Fan Mixing Tutorial

Creating your own remix, a grand idea, but very difficult? Not as difficult as you'd
expect. The key is using your ears. Now how do you remix a track?

REMIXING SOFTWARE

Most popular by far is Cool Edit, named Adobe Audition in the latest
versions, by Syntrillium Software. The only problem is that it is not free. So unless you
are willing to use an illegal version from e.g. Kazaa or similar, you should try a free editor. Fully
functional evaluation versions of Goldwave and Multiquence are available, which should do
the job quite well.

KNOWING YOUR PROGRAM

After you get your audio editor installed, you should get to know the program a bit. Open
an audio file and see what the different functions in the program can do. It may take a
while for you to get to know the functions thoroughly, but with only a minimum of functions
you can get along quite well.

REMIXING

The first thing you should do, is choose a track and think about what you'd like to do with it. It might be a good idea to put this down on paper, as it might get a little confusing if you have all your ideas running around your head.

The next thing you should do, is find the extra musical tracks you need. In most cases of remixing,
you will need parts of different songs, or at least altered parts of the same song (you can
create these by e.g. reversing or manipulating small sections of the song). When you have
done all this, you get to the most difficult part, in the sense that this takes skill (which you
will only learn by remixing often) namely the mixing itself.

To mix a track, you insert, overlap (overdub), remove, etc. parts of the song, and/or manipulate
sections with special effects, such as pitch-alteration or distortion. The main thing is to
use your imagination, as there are no solid 'rules' for remixing a track. As I said in the
beginning of this tutorial, the key is using your ears. If something sounds good to you, it
is a good remix. Try to be original, but don't push it. Make the remix come natural.

FURTHER TIPS

· You could make a good remix by adding parts from different versions of the song, e.g. live renditions.
· Don’t be afraid to use ‘samples’ (fragments) of other songs, even non-Queen ones.
· Demos provide a huge stock of interesting fragments which can be used in songs
· Experiment. If an effect doesn’t work for the song, you can always undo it.
· Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You learn from them.

Forgive me for not knowing much about this but is there a program where can cut and paste samples onto the pallette. A bit like the old PS1 game 'Music'. Where the samples are built in I mean.

Here is a very good tip for searching for samples you may want/need:

Use this string in google = ?intitle:index.of? wav snare

And just replace snare with sample you want to find. Pretty good stuff.
