Yes, it was Roger who asked Brian:

Brian left home because his wife cheated him... Yes, 1977. was difficult and sad year for him...
Brian completely lost his temper at one moment, he wanted to kill her. He told Freddie about that, and when Freddie tried to stop him in his intentions, Brian shouted: "Don't stop me know, Mercury"!
You see... he was so pissed about Freddie taking his wife's side that he didn't even want to call him by his first name...
When they calmed down, they decided to write a few songs about all that...
