Yeah, Queen is also one of my absolute favourites. And its kind of strange, because its the first queen album I own.
Its a really good and balanced album, whit all the tracks having a high standard. I like all the tracks really much, especially Doing allright (maybe the best track on the whole album), my fairy king, the night comes down.
An amazing album overall.

Wow! That was the track listing in Britian and Europe? What an odd sequence. Over in the US and Canada it was:
Side One
Keep yourself alive
Doing all right
Great King Rat
My fairy king
Side Two
Liar
The night comes down
Modern times rock nad roll
Son and daughter
Jesus
Seven seas of rhye
No, you're quite right BHM 0271, it's the same track listing here in britain. I think someone's a bit confused! This is by far my favourite album. The opening riff on keep yourself alive is the ultimate hook. I love doing alright, although I actually think I prefer the smile version (check out 'Ghost of a Smile' - Dutch CD released in the late 90s) it's much more chilled out than the queen version.
Yeah great review. But I think that you should have given "Liar" and "great King Rat" more good credits, as they are the best on the whole album. When Freddie sings in GKR that you don't shall believe what is written in the bible, I think that means that great king rat thinks so, as he is a really great ugly rat.
As you may have guessed, that is my favourite queen song ever, closely folloed by liar (especially the live Earls Court 77 version) and Save Me
I haven't got Queen, News of The World, Jazz, A Kind Of Magic and The Miracle albums yet. So do you think I should get Queen next?
most definitely, not just because personally I think it's the best Queen album, but also because the best place to start is generally at the beginning! I say buy it. Today. Then let us know what you think of it.
i think 'the night comes down' is one of the best vocally i heard from freddie, great range in that song.

I've bought it. It should arrive by Friday, so I'll let you know what I think of it...
i thought " Queen in nuce " was their first album?
No freddie2 queen is their first official album and even though i haven't got "queen in nuce" i gather it contains early smile, larry lurex tracks.
Well this is strange: The EMI UK 8-track also has the same track sequence Brenda gave:

(I really need to update that page one of these days...I have a lot more pix, and one of the Hot Space tapes is labeled incorrectly....)
What were the FAME cassette reissues? (I couldn't tell from the website.) Were they from EMI or a different company?

The Larry Lurex tracks are available elsewhere in better quality, as are Mad the Swine and See What a fool I've been. The quality on the Smile Tracks is awful, so it's much better to get 'Ghost of a Smile', where the quality is near perfect, and you get all 6 tracks that are known to have been recorded. All good fun though!
i agree with you great king rat even though i have Queen in nuce i dont really listen to it because the Quality does suck on it
