Fantastic post by the topic starter... one of the best posts here in a long time.
Personally, I think it'll take a couple generations for western society to accept gays as a whole, or close to it. There will always be a few bigots, but I think the majority will see the light in due time.
Remember, less than a hundred years ago women weren't allowed to vote, and fifty years ago blacks were more or less segregated from whites. Most westerners now look down on these old systems.
We're moving along, and this is our next step. It would be nice for our religious institutions to help out in the process, and in fact, the United Church already is... but in the cases of some others, perhaps that's asking a bit much.

great reply! - the one stumbling block will always be "the christian" church - or in particular - the Roman Catholic Church. There are 1.2billion catholics on the planet - so the church has a great deal of influence...and while they still maintain a piss-poor argument on abortion and the woman's right to choose, then i'm afraid homosexuality an dgay marriage will never get past the Inner Sanctum. The church will not change with the times....Let's face it - they are even instructing Catholics NOT to read The Da Vinci Code - how f***ing stupid

about the church; that's right, you guys.
but what pisses me off is that these ppl don't think for themselves. if the church used common sense (if they have one), they'd realise that God have no reason to dislike gays. gay ppl are just like everybody else. they have good qualities and bad qualities, which is common for all human beings. if you judge someone because he or she is gay, you have a serious problem.
btw the church should remember that God is the only one who really have the right to judge.

I have a few friends who a bi and they are some of the nicest people i know. Of course going to a catholic school is harder for them to come out to everyone. One of my friends gets hurt a lot because she gets crushes on our straight friends and cant do anything about it.

oh... maybe it's offtopib, but with this new pope, i think it will get worse for gay and lesbians in highly-catholic places...
