Had no problems taking photos at Newcastle from the front row. The security guard was right in front of me and is on half of the ones I took as he was so big. I guess us lot from the north east are more laid back.
I can understand the security stopping people taking pictures next to the catwalk, I imaging there is nothing worse in the middle of a guitar solo that to have a camera flash right in front of you.
I have photographed a couple of gigs (with a press pass) and they never let us use a flash (bad techinique anyway ;).

you're even luckier then I thought. I went to the gig in Budapest and their stupid Hungarian security didn't allow even a disposable cameras in the arena. you had to deposit it near the box office. so only about 2 people got their cameras in, and some used their mobiles. such a shame .... I was in the front near Brian!!!!
I was in Budapest as well (my sole chance to ever see them live) and managed to smuggle my camera wearing it in my pants, but the security gorilla at the end of the catwalk was waving all the times at me to stop taking pictures, so I only managed to get a few (bearly 5).
