I think it means that he did everything for love - and even though that may have put him in a lot of painful situations, he can still look back on his life and realize that he was just trying to find love.

Didn't he start going out with Jim Hutton just before the Works was released, and he had a bit of a hard life, with Hot Space, tabloids etc, getting him down. So he wrote the song for love. This is just my opinion.
