Does anyone know if there's any significance in the line, "Oh help me, God, please help me." at the end of IMD? I know it wasn't written by Freddie, but I wondered if he know he was ill when he recorded it, and was ad-libbing?
If there's going to be another studio album, I think they should do a Queen version of this, obviously with FM on vocals, which would be fantastic!

Freddie was not ill at the time of recording this (possibly done in late '84 or '85). As far as I can tell, there's no real significance to any of the lines. But I do know that it only took Freddie one take to sing this! I think that in itself is impressive; as we all know (or SHOULD know) that Queen and Freddie, in particular, were perfectionists.

Yes - there is - if you listen to the song in context.
It comes from a musical called Time, which was performed on the London stage in the mid 1980's, but without listening to the other tracks in order, then I can understand why it makes no sense to you.
The actual show was about a man who has a second chance, and follows his expliots. (No the show was not based on Freddie - or his life).
Therefore, I strongly recommend you hunt down the original LP, and give the complete soundtrack a listen.

Thanks for the info, John. I never really took to Freddie's solo material, so this is one of the few tracks I like. I still think it would have been a great Queen track. :)

I don't mean to split hairs mate, but Freddie did do more than one take of In My Defence, however he never bettered the first take, thus they used it (rather than he did one take and that was that).

Freddie didn't write the song or the lyrics. But he did add the last lines 'help me god, please help me' as an ad lib And the writer (Tim Rice?) liked it
I thought it was making a reference to no one being around to tie his shoes....
