Help with Adobe Audition...

I finally got hold of this program, and I put the normal 'Somebody To Love' and the karaoke version of the same song, but as soon as I tried it out it seemed to think saving itself was cool and now they are all ruined. How do I stop it from automatically saving everything?

Oh and also, is there a way to cut the instruments and just leave Freddie's voice in?

Effects > Filters > Centre Channel Extractor for extracting vocals, but it doesn't do a particularly good job. Have you got DVD Audio Extractor? You can use that to extract the 6 separate channels from a DVD soundtrack, or a DVD-A.

As for the 'automatic saving' issue, I have no answer to that, I'm afraid. In fact, I can't even find an option to make mine do it! Are you sure it's actually saving the file, as in overwriting it? Usually there are warnings when this happens. Have a look at the 'Window' menu - maybe it's hiding windows behind each other?

Yes, it's always wise to keep a back up of your original version, and each time you save, use a different name (i.e. songremix(2).wav, songremix(3).wav) so you can go back if you cock it up!

Are you guys using the multitrack section or are you using destructive editing?

Me, I just use the wave editor (Edit View). Don't know how the rest of it works, although some of my editing can be quite destructive!

The way I used to work was like how you describe, i.e. the edit view (destructive editing). Then Cool Edit Pro (audition's prior name) added a multitrack section and I used that to piece things together. The advantage of that part is that it's easier to put together and then take apart what you've done. It's a nice step up from simply editing things together in the edit section.

And finally, I was recently turned towards a new form of editing. It's all about selecting sections of a song, i.e. intro or outro, etc. And then having these "regions" sitting in a sidepanel as marked areas. And these can be placed into a "playlist" that allows an edit to be pieced together, i.e. intro to verse2 to verse1 to guitar solo, etc. etc. It's certainly a new way of working that I never considered before and it's a quick way of getting some complicated edits put together.
However, I didn't use Audition, although it does have similar functionality. I used Sound Forge as that was the most similar program next to the one the course wanted me to use.

I use Sony Soundforge and Audition, because they both have useful features which the other doesn't. For example, I find the actual editing process (cut / copy / past / mix etc) easier with Soundforge, but some of the effects (echo etc) are better in Audition. Ont thing I don't like about Audition is that unless I zoom right in, I can't always seem to get the curser exactly where I want it, as it seems to 'jump' to certain parts either side. Do you know what I mean, Adam? Is there an option to disable this? It's a bit like it's 'docking'.

Yeah, it sounds like a "snap to" type function. There may be an option...

Well, the only thing I saw was under -Edit>Snapping>...

There were a couple of options ticked, but when I unchecked them, it didn't seem to do much! To be honest, I don't use Audition much as I use only two main programs. My main music app is CubaseSX and that allows me to do proper mixes/recording. The other one that surprised me recently was Vegas Video. It's actually become obvious to me that it's great for music mixes. I'd heard people go on about it being great for audio, which I knew. But there were people making music in this app and I never realised it would be any good!

P.S. Do you ever use directx effects or VST effects?

Umm... if I go to Effects > DirectX, it gives me access to the effects in Nero and Soundforge, so if that's what you mean, then yes, occasionally. Not sure what VST effects are.

VST stands for Virtual Studio Technology. It was the creators at Steinberg, I believe, that came up with this for their Cubase VST series.

Search for free VST effects on the web as they're usually very good. I've got store bought ones that are pretty cool, though they are expensive, sometimes. Here are some free ones I found over the last year or so:

Audition was given support for vst plugins, so it can definitely use them. If not, on one of those pages, there's a vst to directx plugin!

Not really. Sorry. But like I mentioned before, a vst to directx plugin might do the trick. Sound Forge does support directx plugins.

Erm... I have no idea what that is! I run around with the following:

EWQL Colossus (32GB library)
EWQL Symphonic Choirs (68GB library)
Reason 3
Galaxy Steinway 5.1 Piano
Garritan Personal Orchestra

The EWQL pack I was interested in was the RA one. That seems to have a lot of diverse and interesting instruments. I'm very interested in that one. Though, I'd really need to invest in bigger hard disk space to use all of these at once!
