Bowie himself plays this song live with his band (and released it on his latest live DVD.)
I can't see the royalties being an issue between Queen+ and Bowie. I would say it is a quality of performance issue.

The Bowie royalties issue is bollocks... UP was released on Live At The Bowl, Wembley '86, Live Magic etc etc plus the live DVDs.

As mentioned, its a performance quality issue that they arn't happy about.

Well, that didn't stop them from playin AKOM.
But that's a whole different story. Too bad UP is not on the DVD/CD, but hey, we've still got the boots to listen to.

Thank you so much for posting this!!!!!

In that case they probably should have chosen to cut quite a few other songs from the upcoming album as well. ;)

Neither Bri or Rog are exactly great with their singing, and if they hadn't been members of Queen, very few people would want to hear them sing the Queen songs in the first place.
(This is also something they realised themselves. The whole +Paul Rodgers -angle is just a trick to fool the general audience into thinking they have a vocalist, and still manage to sing as many of the songs as possible by themselves...)

Your first point - what songs then?

2nd point - are you being silly?

AKOM was better performed as the tour went on. Unlike UP, they had time on tour to get this one down better.

I think the performance is actually pretty good. There's some real passion there, and Roger has sung this song live by himself with great success. The instrumentation/arrangment is exquisite, too -- it's a real study of restraint, letting the song take over.

Sorry for the purple prose. Writing an academic paper while I surf the boards.

Say It's Not True, '39, Days Of Our Lives, Radio Ga Ga, Hammer To Fall... I can accept one song from Bri and Rog, but there's hardly any need for a longer break than 15 minutes for Paul.

I'm not being silly. Bri & Rog are third rate singers at their best, and if they had not been members of Queen you wouldn't even want to hear them sing!
To put it in perspective, if you had gone to a Queen concert twenty years ago, and find out that Freddie was doing all the guitar solos, you might have been a bit pissed of.
M
Brian and Roger are third rate singers??? Roger's range is about 3 octaves, Brian's is 2.5 or something... damn, I really wish I was such a third rate singer!

... me too, Scully (I can't sing at all), but we can't deny that Bri can sound really awful when he tries to sing like the Red Special - while he's wonderfully good when he rememebers to sing like Brian May...

:-)

... and I'd spend hours listening to Roger, FWIW...

Yes. They suck, and the only reason why most people listen to them is because they were members of Queen.

I'm guilty of that myself. I have bought the solo records and listen to them from time to time. If they hadn't been in Queen, I wouldn't have given them second thought. :P

I did however pay for the QPR show in the hopes of actually hearing the SINGER of that particular combination singing those Queen songs, so you can imagine my disappointment.

i bet it will be Roger and Bri listened to each version they did on the tour, wembley, manchester etc, and probably thought they did crap with it or it sounds crap so to save there rep as great artists not to include it in the dvd/cd which could then make people like critics have a go at them with snotty comments about how they performed a extremely good song!

my opinion anyways! :D
D
Both Brian and Roger's solo albums are what they are -- solo albums. That's why they call them solo albums. By which I mean they are in a band, and now they are doing things, solo.

I just think it's necessary to clarify that. The popularity of Queen is such that people will come to see them play solo or combined. This isn't new -- John Entiwstle filled up halls when he was alive, as did Roger Daltrey.

But my main point -- and I do have one -- is that this pouncing on Brian and Roger's singing skills is absurd and mean-spirited. It's like picking on Keith Richards' singing on his solo albums -- which are great, mind you -- or Entwistle's -- which are also quite good.

These voices are/were *inherent* to how you listened to the whole band's sound. And these are not crap bands or third-rate bands. To take it apart and pick on it, it's ridiculous. The whole is much more than the sum of the part. Which is why the Queen + Paul Rodgers tour has been a success.
