Freddie could be anything he wanted to be
Just turn himself into anything he thought that he could ever be
Be free with his tempo be free be free
Surrender his ego be free be free to himself

Rip Van Winkel wrote something like hes had 100s of guys, but experimented with a few women, this does not make him bi-sexual. Surely then if the opposite were applied, and he had had hundreds of women and experimented with a few blokes that does not make him gay?

I still like to think that Freddie was very much a free spirit, all the time. If he met someone who
he fancied, he took the opportunity, and that was that. If he met someone who he liked on an intellectual level maybe he spent longer getting to know them, and just possibly he didnt totally
understand his sexuality anyway.

Two things are clear to me, Freddie wanted a relationship with someone he trusted and loved, he had that with both Mary and Jim, that, in my book makes him bi-sexual.

Secondly he was a people person, he enjoyed peoples company, and if he trusted them he would not want to lose their friendship (proof of that in all his ex lovers living with him at Garden Lodge.

Finally, my view is that he lived life so much in the fast lane, he wanted to sample as much as he could, maybe looking for an answer that always evaded him, his life was very complicated, even during school / teenage years he had the schoolmate he experimented with, and the lady that was on GMTV, so even that far back he was
trying to make his mind up. I wonder if Freddie had lived, if he would still be with Jim? Afterall
he did cheat on him, I think above all he needed to feel secure, and who ever his other half was at the time, if they fitted that bill, they would
do until something more attractive came along. However, I dont think Mary would ever truly be replaced.
Is it happening?

Really you have to be joking! This subject is older than the hills. Well, I can speak only from personal experience as I only seen Freddie with gay men, but he admired women.

and speaking as a gay man, myself who has alot of women friends I can tell you that at the time I came out of the preverbial closet there was a lot of gay haters more so then than now.

I came out in the 1970s and let me just say we had to know who and where to met otherwise we'd be completely beaten up. As I unfortunately was back in 1972 in Liverpool by a bunch of bloody thugs...but I shall not go into that.

Before I came out I dated both sexes as well but sex with women for a gay man is kind of like fishing in a bucket. Whilst I was with my male lovers it felt right and comfortable.

Cheers all,
David

Hi there David, its interesting to see it from your point of view, and youve made some good points such as the distinct threat of being beaten up back in the 70s, which was probably a big part of the reasoning behind Freddies behaviour at that time. As he felt safe when surrounded by his mates, he allowed himself to indulge when he was out. He surely must have been a risk taker, I read in some book somewhere
that when he was told of clubs which were considered no-go areas he made a point of going!

The thing that makes me more than a little uncertain about his sexuality is that he slept (reputedly) with Barbara Valentin, in an interview with her daughter she said she could have seen them getting married!

As you said this subject is as old as the hills, and everyone will have their opinions I think the only thing we can assume for definate is Freddie certainly wasnt straight!

Well, at first he was bisexual but then it went to full blown gay. Yeah.

Well Freesia, lovely flowers BTW but not to get off the subject...Freddie was a man who LOVED to shock people...not sure if he slept with Barbara Valentin but she was a very sexy woman...and alot of gay men worshipped her because of her work with Fassbinder (not sure of spelling), anyway her daughter probably was correct but Freddie must have been out of his head high on coke when it happened, dear.

He and Barbara were certainly coked up much of the time back then. They shared an apartment in Munich for a while and then after he passed she had a time holding on to it for legal reasons.

Very true David, perhaps it was just the side of his personality where he liked to keep everyone guessing, and I reckon hes probably sat up there thinking look at them, still trying to guess what Bo Rhap was about, still wondering about my sexuality, he will be having a BALL!

I think it would appeal to him immensely if he could see the confusion and questions he left behind!

I think with hindsight, he probably started with experimenting at school, and as you say, the 70s were a whole different ball game to today, so possibly kept things under his hat so to speak. Then with Mary, he realised possibly that he loved her but more as a friend, then later spending more time in Munich and NY came out when he was more relaxed in the company he was with.

So, I suppose, from there on he was out and out gay, I hadnt thought of the coke being involved with Barbra, that would explain it.

It matters not to me, I found him just as attractive whether he was gay, bi or straight!
Is it happening?

Like really who cares but I'd say he was Bi

Because if he was only experimenting....he wouldn't have done the experimenting over the years....let's face it from what we here he probably would have done anyone or anything that was legal....when it comes down to Mary, Barbara, Rose, the girls Brian may says he'd go into a room with...there were girls on tour etc. etc. etc....he had his preferences but if he wanted his rocks off he'd find someone....not that I condone that type of behaviour esp. now.....a lot of people don't seem to think their can be a bi...as if it HAS to be one or the other....

I've always been curious though too why Mary got almost everything....like just think if you are in a relationship yet leave all your stuff to one of your friends? doesn't that seem strange? and everyone seemed to hate Mary for it....while quite obviously Freddie loved Mary very much to do that for her....
