What's anybody's opinion of Richard Ashcroft and The Verve?
I never really knew anything by them execept 1 song, Bitter Sweet Symphony, which got minimal MTV and radio play in 1997.
After Live 8, when Aschcroft performed the song with Coldplay, I started checking out all of their music...and I LOVE them!
Very talented, great songs, great musicianship, orchestrating, lyrics.
I know about the internal problems within the band that broke them upi, but WHY didn't they get MUCH bigger here in the states when they WERE together?
Also, I read that they got SUED! by The Rolling Stones for a sample they used in Bitter Sweet Symphony that is from The Stones' The Last Time and were forced to pay 100& of all royaltied/publishing rights to The Stones.
Well, this weekend I kept listening to BOTH The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony AND The Rolling Stones' The Last Time and I did NOT hear any similarity at all.

It actually samples the Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra's version of 'The Last Time', not the Stones themselves as is often thought to be the case. Hence the reason it doesn't sound like The Rolling Stones' version.
That whole debaucle with the Verve getting sued by the Stones for using a symphonic version of "The Last Time" in "Bittersweet Symphony" was in reality Allen Klein's doing, although Mick and Keith got nice chunks of change from the settlement. Klein is the copyright holder to all the Stones' songs they recorded on the ABKCO label in the '60s, but Mick & Keith get songwriting royalties.

But that would mean that in actuality, The Verve sampled Andrew Loog Oldham's COVER REWORKING of the song, and NOT the Stones' original version at all.
How the hell did he Stone's ..er Klein win that lawsuit?
That makes no legal sense at all.
I heard that lawsuit totally devastated and ended the band and I have to say, that does not hold water (to me in my opinion) legally.
How can you sue for a sample of a reworked COVER version?

They're ok..bit overrated. Though they are better than Oasis!! So you know where they stand. :P
