To set the record straight...

It is the L's that they have trouble with, not the R's.....

Such as...

You light up my life would sound like...

"Youuuuuu, right up my rife....."

Can Japanese produce a proper "r"? lol!

Actually, neither the written or spoken aspects of the Japanese language include an 'l' in the alphabet equivalents (since their "letters", except for n, are a consonant followed by a vowel. However, x is also not used in the Japanese language). It does have an r (depending which vowel is used in conjunction), but the r's are actually pronounced closer to, but not quite, 'l', so the pronounciation is somewhere inbetween the two.
Local dialects can also affect how they're pronounced (it's a long running joke apparently in Japan about the different dialects that are unique (?) to the prefectures* that Tokyo and Osaka are located in each, respectively)

I've been listening to a lot of anime and reading some material, so of course I would know these useless bits of information :P

They can, actually. Depending on the dialect, as I said above.

Poor Japanese (and Koreans),some of them really have difficulty pronouncing "r", but we DO understand them:)

but it makes for an interesting discusion when you talk about how the US has ELECTIONS every 4 years.........
