A Mighty Wind

Who here has seen this movie? I was introduced to it a few weeks ago by a friend, and it's become my absolute favorite movie of all time. Well, for the moment at least. Anyway, it's written by Christopher Guest (famous for This Is Spinal Tap, as well as Waiting For Guffman and Best In Show, the last two which I have yet to see) and Eugene Levy, and is about three folk groups from the sixties who reform for a tribute concert to their deceased managers.

I think the most impressive thing about the movie, apart from the fact that it's all improvised, is that all the actors in the groups played their own instruments and wrote the songs, and almost all of the music in the movie is performed live. It's another one of Christopher Guest's mockumentaries, and while it's not as hilarious as Spinal Tap, its humor is a lot more subtle. Highly recommended, as well as the soundtrack, which features all the songs from the movie and a few extras, notably a folk version of 'Start Me Up'.

For once I thought you were talking the outcome of eating a Burrito Supreme from Taco Bell.

Erin and I actually just bought this on DVD the other day. Not had a chance to watch it yet though.

Absolute brilliance!!

The characters that they come up with, especially for A Mighty Wind, are deep and brilliant.

Better than Waiting for Guffman, on par with Best In Show.

I would LOVE to see them do a mockumentary on the Texas Holdem Poker craze that we have in the world today......

Get in there, listen to some of the tunes, it is laugh out loud funny.

I would have to say that, among the three groups, my favorite are The Folksmen (and not only because they are the same characters who were Spinal Tap). The music they did was great, especially 'Old Joe's Place' and 'Loco Man' (which is actually running through my head right now).

However, for emotional value, Mitch & Mickey are amazing, and the vocals of Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara become downright heartbreaking on 'One More Time', 'The Ballad Of Bobby and June' (which wasn't in the movie but is on the soundtrack, and is one of my favorite songs), and especially 'A Kiss At The End Of The Rainbow'.

The New Main Street Singers are good but a little too happy for me, although 'Potato's In The Paddy Wagon' and 'The Good Book Song' are great and toe-tapping. The concluding 'A Mighty Wind' is perhaps my favorite song, if only for the final "it's blowing you and me" line.

As a bonus on the DVD, they have the unedited concert as it would have appeared on PBN that night, and it's really quite good. Also, I was initially anti-Fred Willard, but his Hi-Class Management bit is just amazing. "Hey, wha' happened?!" I crack up at that every time.

I remember my mother and I absolutely lost it in the theatre when that one guy says his age. Who was that? It's been a while but he starts to say it then rubs his mouth to muffle it out.

I watched the 'concert' bloody excellent.

I would say I rather Best in Show to this but there aren't too many movies that are better than this.

Ahh, Fred Willard. That whole scene is comedy gold. "Hey, wha' happened?!"

I think we may need to watch this tonight..:-)
If it's half as funny as Best in Show, it'll be great.
