First, thank you Lester for starting good threads...and most of those who wrote great responses.....
I cannot decide on whether 'Dark Side Of The Moon', 'Abbey Road', or 'A Day At The Races' has the best side two of any album that I have ever heard.
It's that great.
Changing of moods, tempo, etc etc etc....that's what makes for a great album (beyond the fact that each and every one is Queen at their best). From an operatic, yet rock opening STL (compared to BoRhap, anything would come up short),
White Man....finally, a political tune. Great b-side for STL, perfect follow-up, nice fade out to
GOFLB....never a personal favorite, but it just grew on me. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 o'clock....
Drowse.....I was 18, and it was so directed toward any teenager who heard it.
Teo Torriatte.....even my friends who really didn't care for the 'fluff' of Queen back then loved this. Played it for my wedding.
It was often played on a local AOR during its 'half an album' lunch hour at noon. And for good reason.
I bought the STL/White Man 45, because I could not wait the two weeks for the LP to be released. I had to hear an offering of what else would be on the LP other than STL.
As to the rest....TYMD....(son of 'Sweet Lady)
'nuff said.
YTMBA...who else would follow a 'knock the walls off the house' tune with such a terrific ballad. For those who don't like the ending, delete it. But that was the 70s style, and Queen at their best. If one cannot melt emotionally during this, something is wrong with them.
'Long Away'....more a side two, carbon-copy of '39', but it's good on its own.
TMW......with the lights out, sitting in a nice, cozy room, eyes closed....another side two, but it's just so Queen and Freddie (or Julie Andrews, as Freddie said so about this track).
You and I.....lame then, son of YMBF, but terrific compared to the 80s stuff.
Only fault: I missed the 1-2 minute ditties, and the segues from one track to another that was so prevalent on the previous releases.
But it had side two. Such as The Beatles 'Sgt Pepper/Abbey Road', or Styx 'Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight'.......ANATO and ADATR equal the best two of any group, and the cover art framed, with opposite background, make wonderful wall art.

Overall, I think it's easy to see why ADATR was overshadowed by ANATO and NOTW. Queen was still very much in their classic period, but the songs of ADATR don't even compare, IMO, to tracks on previous albums. The Millionaire's Waltz, although a cool song, can't touch BoRhap and TMOTBQ, it just didn't rock enough....and that could be said about the entire album. It still has plenty of positives though. Somebody to Love is a classic, maybe a Top 10 Queen song. Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy and Teo Torriate are also two of my favorites. Long Away is one of Brian's better songs, too. Anyhoo, my review...

absolutely phenomenal song, maybe Freddie's best vocal work. Every part of this song is fantastic.

beautiful song, love the (is that harmonica?) at the end with the outro
86/100 86% Good, above average Queen album, probably their 6th best behind ANATO, NOTW, QII, QI, and Innuendo

I definetly think this album is perfect.I love the intro before Tie Your Mother Down and how it is played again after Teo Torriate.
