I do believe that after John found out that the disc jockey in America found had announced Paul dead that he just wanted to have a real piss take.
Some of the 'coincedences' are a bit dumb though like the 'Paul is a dead man, miss him, miss him, miss him', 'Turn me on, dead man', the skeletal fingers on The Beatles, most of the Abbey Road cover, the 'holding a knife under the Sgt. Peppers' drum skin for the '1 ONE I X HE ^ DIE' message, the 'Billys Hear' and it goes on. I find it stupid and it's almost as if people are looking for clues as opposed to appreciating the music.
11 solo US #1's is pretty good. Just a little bit.

Just imagine, Paul died, and someone has replaced him who looks, sounds, writes, sings, plays and in general acts exactly the same as Macca.
The only thing differant I heard was his replacement is Billy Shears (from the opening track of Sgt.Pepper)
