Michael Berg Running for Office

Ten minutes after the "get over it" comment, Michael [Berg], dressed in a black anti-war T-shirt, blue jeans and sandals with black socks, announced he was running for office.

If nominated, his battle to beat Castle surely will be uphill. The former governor has won re-election with at least 66 percent of the vote in every race since 1994.

John Atkeison, chairman of the Green Party in Delaware, envisions a campaign that could draw a lot attention.

"It would be a campaign of national importance," Atkeison says. "He feels this is the only way to give the death meaning."

Castle's press secretary Elizabeth Wenk says the office has only one comment: "We certainly welcome any comers into the race."

That's more than Michael got from his family. When he told them he was running, he was met with silence.

"They made no comment at all, which to me was positive," he says.

Michael expects to have a small campaign budget, which will mean riding his bicycle -- colored green with soon-to-be-purchased green wheels -- up and down the state.

He'll leave his beat-up 1993 red Geo convertible with a taped-up rear window at home, even though it could double as a billboard for his beliefs. It's randomly plastered with 20 or so bumper stickers espousing his anti-war beliefs, along with vegetarianism and other causes.

If Berg beats Castle, he says he won't be tooling around the marble halls of Congress in Armani. "I told the Greens, what you see is what you get. I don't dress up," he says. "I won't wear the same sheep's clothing that the wolves wear."

He also told the Greens that if any campaign activities conflict with his weekly peace vigils, they'll have to do without him.

Well, I'm sure some people will be interested in the fact that Mr. Berg is running for office. And, truly, if you don't want to read it, no one is forcing you to click on it. I am sure that Mr. Berg is most appreciative that I am spreading news of his candidacy to the public.

I must say, I don't need any more of those, one of each is fine. However, when some people lack all three, I can see room for improvement. I've come to pass only one person who has actually managed to fall short in all three of those categories. You.
