Did Freddie Mercury have vocal education?

Is it true that he did't have any vocal education? His voice sounds so trained, even in the beginning. I can't believe that you sound like this without learning it. Once I was told that one of his parents was an opera singer ... is this true? .... I never heard it again. He liked operas a lot, did he want to be an opera singer.
I am sure many of you know the answer. Could anybody let me know? You know so much about his live ... so I am sure that you also know the answer to this. I study musicology and I really would like to know it as I need such things as part of my education. ;-)

Hope you can help me!

Stefan
No, his parents weren't opera singers. About his voice - read all stuff from this site: http://www.f-mercury.com.ar/frames_eng.htm Maybe answer on your question is there, but I haven't heard anything about any kind of Freddie's vocal education.
Freddie had NO formal vocal training - although he did make grade 5 as a piano player.

His voice was honed much in the same way as other great 20thC artists - Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, John Lennon - ie: Individualism and lots of practice.

No. He did take piano, though. I remember cos I did a report on him for school last year.
