Treble Booster

Does anybody have any suggestions for a good treble booster similar to the Dallas Rangemaster of the sixties? Something that would give me something similar to Brian May's sound? I looked into Greg Fryer's boosters, but I really don't have the cash to pay $300 for a treble booster, of all things. Apparently Mr. Fryer's service, support, and quality are second to none, but I really don't have the money.

I would love to DIY, but it seems complicated. How much money does cost, do you figure? I'd be willing to learn.

I hear a bunch of talk on treble boosters driving tubes, but would they also have an effect on solid state amplifiers as well?

Won't be the same.
Part of the sound came from driving the power tubes.
Distortion in SS amps is done in the preamp and in tube/valve amps distortion/overdrive comes from the preamp and the power amp.
If you're talking solid state you might want to look at amp modelling.

I have the Pete Cornish TB-83, and now i want a Fryer Treble Booster plus, but you can only get them in Australia where Greg Fryer lives so it will be hard to get one.

The Rangemasters suck, they are very noisy and unreliable and don't overdrive the Vox AC30 enough in my opinion.

That's what I was thinking. When I was 14 I was happy to get a Nintendo 64 (or whatever they had then), and that was one of the most expensive things I owned. Shit, I can't even afford a single AC30 now.

What do you mean? I don't think Brian May was very complicated in this area.

Wouldn't a Tube Screamer be close enough?
