Freddie Mercury was not gay! shut up shut up shut up!!! I swear he and I will hook up even though he's dead and 40 years older than me! IT WILL HAPPEN! (that's me making fun of some of the fangirls here)
It's hard for people to accept change. But if you don't change, you don't risk. Freddie would have been a phony if he would have complied with what only people wanted. He risked to do other things, some were more popular than others. Oh, well.

He was a great composer, a singer with amazing vocal range, a talented piano player, and had the ability to captivate the audience with his stage presence.
He did change, but that only shows growth and his fearless attitude not to succumb to pressure to maintain the status quo. He and other band members were ready for a break from each other after so many years. I don't see it as being phoney, I see it as moving on and changing as one grows.

His struggle for Bohemian Rhapsody proves that.
