I can't believe I am adding to this thread....but since many of the fans who post here are very young I suppose I can point out a few things since I was following the band back in 1970's.
I believe WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS is nothing more than a catchy anthem the band released very early on...a trademark sound that made them easily recognized before they became hugely famous.
As for the contention that it has some particular relevance to AIDS or the Gay community:
The song pre-dates the AIDS epidemic by a number of years....no one had even heard of AIDS at the time the song was recorded.
While I can't say for sure that it has no secret gay connotation, Freddie was still involved with Mary Austin and living a publicly straight lifestyle when it was released. The other three members of the band are heterosexual so I find it rather unlikely that the song contains any intentional gay message or agenda.

I agree with you. I've been a fan since 77 and the lyrics are obviously dealing with the topic of trials and tribulations of his success and finally reaching it. I think the chorus is paying tribute to the fans that made him a success and put him on top. Your welcome Freddie. Thanks for the music!

The beauty of those songs is that anyone can relate to them, and i think that is the ultimate goal for a songwriter.
