Freddie thought it up years before the band formed. It sounded so regal and original, which was why he wanted it. He said that he was aware of the gay connections, but it sounds splendid!
Brian wanted to call the band Build Your Own Boat and Roger wanted to call them Rich Kids.

Well.. Roger once said "It sounded big, short, simple and it had two e's in it (???) It's also got various ambiguous connotations"

Well, it's sure better that Build Your Own Boat and Rich Kids, I think...

Of course, Midge Ure ripped off the name Rich Kids for his band.

I always thought Queen were called Queen because Freddie wanted a name that was...um...important and powerful.

Yeah Freddie choose this name because he said it was royal, magestic, pompass and easy to say.

I can't remember if either Roger or Brian said in an interview that while no one but Freddie originally liked the idea they ended up discussing the name for a while and soon realized that if they were talking about it so much themselves then it would probably provoke similar reactions from other people.

I guess when you're trying to promote yourself then whatever it takes to get people talking about you is a good thing.

Why name the band Queen? Well i tell you all it's much better then Rich Kids and Brian's name for it. Queen suits them alot.
