Does anyone know how the songs on these singles were chosen? I mean why wasn't keep yourself alive a single or your my best friend a single on its own?

The 3" CD singles were designed to replicate original hit singles, which sort of counts KYA out. EMI presumably decided to not release all 30 or whatever there were by then, so some sort of selection process had to take place. They didn't do too badly.
