Brian May Vs. Freddie Mercury (songwriting)

The reason I say freddie is for those originality reasons. No one wrote songs like leroy brown or killer queen. These sounds were never created before, brian is a great songwriter but as great as tie your mother down is, it was done before by other hard rock bands. Listen to the originality in barcelona, no one ever did anything so original. by the way, I think roger taylor was the least original songwriter in queen.

I think the four of them were highly original. Not every drummer is able to compose such different songs like Modern Times and Days Of Our Lives, or a hard-rock song in 3/4.

As far as Bo Rhap, Black Queen or Bicycle Race are concerned, yes, they were outside Brian's expertise in what concerns harmony, structure and rhythmic tricks. But it doesn't mean Fred's better.

For the same extent we can say that '39 or Long Away are outside Fred's expertise in that sort of music, and it doesn't mean Brian's better.

Regarding "not done before" stuff, I don't know any rock guitarist who arranged and recorded a jazz band all by himself, composed a vocal canon, wrote a Jap-like ballad and a procession.

For me it's impossible to answer that

Freddie was the strongest songwriter up to 'A Day At The Races', from then on I think it was Brian.

well roger mainly wrote "under pressure" just pointing that out but i do think that they all had great songs theres no way to messure i guess it depends on the person who writes this my two favorite songs are "good company" by brian and the other is "millionair waltz" by freddie and i dont think i could ever choose..

Brian is, in my opinion, the best songwriter in Queen.

Roger didn't write Under Pressure. He liked it a lot and had some input in the production along with Freddie, Mack and David Bowie, but he didn't compose it. The song is chiefly Freddie's.

And Show is mainly Brian's although 90% of the chords are by Roger and John.

I agree...Bri was good at the more hard rocking stuff...but I love SAVE ME, and WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER, AND THE SHOW MUST GO ON( I know the group took a part in writing it, but Brian wrote most of it)....beautiful songs!!!

Other popular misconceptions:

Innuendo is Freddie's....not Roger's
TATDOOL is Roger's.......not Freddie's
TSMGO is John/Roger Chords.... first verse Fred/Brian together.... rest of lyrics Brian.
Line of "I'll face it with a grin, I'm never giving in" is Fred's according to Freestone...Brian presented Fred with the line "My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies..etc..etc.." Freestone said Fred carried that piece of paper around for days of Brian's lyrics...
Then added the "I'll face it with a grin" line... that was the only change made to Brian's lyrics...

Freestone added that Freddie commonly "took over" the songs of the others when presented (but always made fast frantic changes...could completely change a song in 5 minutes according to those close)...with TSMGO Fred commented to Phoebe and Jim "Brian has handed me his best work ever to look over, and I don't feel good enough to do a damn thing about it."

Mad props to Brian for the arrangement and 90% of the lyrics for TSMGO... unreal song...
