Brian recently answered this on his site, stating that the recordings were without audience sound, and therefore sounded very dry. he said they were mainly for their own purposes in reviewing their performances.

I'll second that. I recall reading an interview where Brian said after almost every show they listened to the recording on the way back to the hotel in the limo.

Yeah, that's the Tokorozawa show mentioned above. It has been discovered that it wasn't actually in Tokyo. The video was actually about an hour long.
