Is it a last dance for popular rock group The Red Hot Chili Peppers or a petty coincidence?
Callers to WGMD Radio’s Dan Gaffney Morning Show expressed surprise and outrage when Gaffney Show producer Jared Morris uncovered an apparent case of plagiarism in the Chili Peppers’ new hit song “Dani California.”
Morris and Gaffney allege that there are startling similarities between “California” and Rocker Tom Petty’s early 1990’s hit “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.”
“The chord progression, the melody, the tempo, the key, the lyrical theme… they’re identical,” Morris said.
The callers agreed. “I play music myself. Those are the exact chords, the exact pitch, almost the same harmony,” WGMD listener Apostle Ivory Hopkins said. “Good God, Man.”
Morris and Gaffney urge you to decide for yourself.

They are definitely similar.
They definatley sound the same...
While we're on that... In Green Day, "Jesus of Suburbia", where the part of "City of the damned" (or what its name is, can't remember) chorus comes on, doesn't it sound exactly like "Summer of 69" to you??

What I find strange is the combination of similarities in the main riff, the lyrical content, and the guitar solo hooks.

I can see the startling similarity.
I played it to my brother, who's a big Chilli's fan, and he threw a tantrum, said "do those people have nothing better to do", and stormed out.
So I'm assuming he hears it too...

Knowingly or UNknowingly, the Chili Peppers indeed ripped off Tom Petty.

Am I the only one who thinks that the guitar solo in Dani California starts the same way as the final guitar solo in November Rain?
