Hey Adam, I don't know if anyone told you but on German TV someone did this *awesome* video where they rotoscoped Freddie Mercury onto stage with a bunch of other people. It was amazing!

They painted out the background of "These Are The Days Of Our Lives" with a computer and put Freddie in with the new footage.
This half of the effect is easy but time consuming, it's called rotoscoping.
The trickier part (I think, anyway) is shooting new footage that will fit with the old stuff. Then again, there are ways of matching up the colours afterwards but still.
It's a trick as old as the hills, this just happens to be a particularly pretty example of it. Pity they couldn't rotoscope Freddie in with some *interesting* people, like the other guys from Queen maybe, instead of whoever those other people were.
