Freddies stage persona

I'm pretty convinced that Freddie was high on something in New York on July 28th, 1982. He couldn't put a single sentence together without swearing.

By then he was swearing a lot in concerts because he knew Queen were becoming uncool in the US, so perhaps it was an attempt to appear "cooler".

It all depends on the audience reaction, British people are more ok with the cursing on stage than for example Japan. You'll never hear a Japanese concert where a Queen member swears. They just respected the audience.

As for the Great Brittain (English) shows Freddie swears a lot and the audience doesn't give a damn and even goes along with it (for example Wembley 86 after the day-O thing Freddie says "fuck you" and the crowd cheers)

LOL that was funny when Freddie told the audience fuck you...and it was funny when he went over to get a drink during the "rockabilly" part of the wembley concert, and Roger was like "Ahhhhhhhh" and Freddie was like, I dont care, I need my fucking water!!! Hilarious!!!!

I could sit here and speculate till the cows come home about what it was that made Freddie come out of his shell more with the audience.

Doesnt matter to me really. The more shy Freddie or the more camp freddie that says "fuck you" to me on my DVD player, i love him either way. I know its not meant in any malicious way...

Ever some of the blunders?? Like "Bri's got a big c**K" from some bootleg... not sure of it but i j/ heard the clip online with a few other stage mistakes, but it was funny. Probably embarassing to our dear Bri, but not meant with any malice...

actually, i've never really seen freddie perform live. the closest thing i've got is live at wembley. well, he cusses there, right?

The thing about this is "IF" there is a noticable difference with Freddie during that period,(I have never looked for any personaly)you can't say that those books were all rubbush. Ok, maybe it wasn't cocane, but like I said "IF" there is a difference, then something changed him and for that part those books were right, they may have blown stuff out of perportion but they were right.

I've never seen him perform live PERSONALLY, unless you count watching DVDs in my living room hehe ;-D

And on the LIVE MAGIC CD (the choppy one) too...

saltnvineger, yes i was lucky, I saw them in Dallas Texas, at the moody coliseum in feb, I was 22, and I loved them from the start , they had a unique sound that I loved, Freddie was great they all were. Then I seen them again in 1982, in Dallas in august, I believe it was the 21st, at reunion stadium, and Freddie had much more stage persona, and was great he had great wit and humor, I am 53 now and still love them and thier music, which my grandkids enjoy. lol...

Thank you doeeyes for those memories, I really do envy you and admire you for getting into them in the first place. I wonder how they were marketed to the American audiences back in the mid-70's, I've always thought it was a very different music scene compared to what was going on in the UK at that time. What was it that caught your eye about them? How did the audiences reaction change between the first gig and the '82 one? I guess that was kind of the beginning of the end of their popularity in the US wasn't it?..and a final, totally irrelevant question-did you have good seats?!
BTW sorry to hijack the thread everyone, just wanted to ask a few questions...back to Freddie's stage persona!.....

Fred's stage persona had to change because Queen were playing bigger venues. In the early years, he could afford to be quite intimate and explain the songs exactly but post-77 they move dinto large indoor arenas where a more strident persona is needed, everything has to be magnified, the same is said of the stadium- so by '86 he was v. agressive and outrageous because it needs to register.

Just as long as he's not doing "the worm", I'm happy. I would agree to be a loaded tart (or part of the load) if he agreed to never do "the worm" on stage or generally in public.

saltnvineger, thankyou, first I was always into different music when I was about 15, I loved the doors janis joplin jimi hendrix, then came this song, borap, I thought it was so unique, and the guitar sound they sounded like no other, so they
facinated me from the start, they were better received in the uk, united states I hate to say were not into different sounds or people, and freddie of course was the showman. but there were lots of fans, but not like the uk. in 1982 he changed his look of course, myself I liked it
he was a beautifull man, very lithe and very sexy
the us did not take to it, but they had their heads up their ass, as far as I was concerned.
I had good seats and enjoyed the shows so much, Freddie was so great and funny, he was more into it by 1982. later on the I want to break free video turned a lot of people off, but I thought all of it was in good fun, a lot of people especially in the south were i live, they all love country music, but there are still a lot of Queen fans here, I cherish all those memories especially 1977 when they were getting thier feet wet, and becoming the great band they are,
they always spoke to the audiance, and Freddie would look at you when he sang, good eye contact

Almost everything Freddie said was IN JEST. C'moooooon, I think that is one of the biggest misconception about him is that he is really arrogant. On paper most of the Freddie quotes sound cocky and rude but if you actually hear him say it you would know that he is joking. He's not "rude and swearing at the audience"
