That's kind of what I figured too...though I never really knew the right answer to that question either...crazy stuff!!
Yeah it's not uncommon to hear things which weren't used in the original mix.. this is perhaps an extreme example because I'm sure they intended to add unheard stuff to make it more interesting.. but even garden variety remixes such as the 1991 Hollywood ones, or the karaoke mixes, 5.1 mixes..
since they go back to the original multi-track tapes, new stuff which was muted during the original mix can be revealed sometimes, or they may even grab some stuff from other takes of a song.
On the other hand, things might be left out of the new mix too, such as the synths during the guitar solo of 'I Want it All' 5.1 mix.. which I actually like better than the original.. gives the guitar sound more focus :)
