It does not have the originals. But I kind of like Brian's H&V better than the original. And GV is way better on Smile, than it is on it's original CD. You will LOVE "Smile". :)

Spector's production-techniques used to their maximum, and vocal harmony in pop-music brought to the highest level pure consonance can support. An album which deserves a place on every music lover's shelve-of-honour, whether you like the Beach Boys or not.

To answer your question my favourite songs on Smile are Vege-Tables, Child Is The Father Of The Man and Hero And Villains :D The whole album is a masterpeice though. And you are quite correct, Pet Sounds was Brian Wilson, and I think only a few of us understand his genious. :)

Pet Sounds is one of my favorite albums ever and God Only Knows is by far one of the best songs I've ever heard. I would disagree though that pre-Pet Sounds Beach Boys should be considered as nothing but disposable-pop. With songs like Warmth of the Sun and In My Room already in their catalog the genius of Brian Wilson had already been unveiled. Pet Sounds if anything was the first (and maybe the only) full BBs recording that had such fine attention paid to every song instead of just having a few great songs mixed with a certain amount of filler.
Personally I would even say songs like Calfornia Girls and Fun Fun Fun while being easily considered as disposable pop are still quite slick and extremely well crafted in their ways of representing such an uplifting and outgoing spirit and set of ideals.
What really gets me though is how happy, encouraging and harmonious the early BBs music can be and then discovering just how sad, desperate and tormented the Wilsons lives actually were....particularly Brian. To me what seems like one of the more significant changes with the Pet Sounds era was how the music had started to embrace some of the more darker aspects of life as they (or at least Brian) knew it.

I am no Beach Boys buff (I enjoy Pet Sounds). However a friend of mine recently saw Brinizzay Wilzon and he (friend, not Brian Wilson) said that he (Brian Wilson, not friend) was shocking. That Brian didn't do the *wooo woo* noise in Good Vibrations, that he kept looking at the back up singers for prompting, he very rarely played piano/keyboard and when he did he fluffed it up and that he had no idea what the bass was for when he played Wouldn't It Be Nice. Generally a fairly shit set list from the friend.
Then again this was the same concert that The Vines played. Although I do like me some Vines action.

PS is an album full of sounds, harmony, i love how the boys mixed their voices and created all taht beautiful sounds, i gotta say that i think that "Sunflower" it's a better album, more mature, better songs, and you can notice a lot of group work, check it really, sometimes from my perspective is amazin how the boys influenced Queen harmonys
