Possible 1974 Hamburg WDR footage?

Evening All,

As a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan (and of course the mighty QUEEN), I just downloaded some excellent Skynyrd Hamburg footage that was broadcast on WDR. I thought I had all the available Skynyrd footage so the quality of this stuff really surprised me.

What surprised me even more was the headline acts equipment, in place behind support band Skynyrd. I thought, "I recognise those drums" and sure enough, the bass drum skin (and vocal monitor) was adorned with the classic QUEEN crest. Most people will know that Skynyrd supported QUEEN in 74.

This begs the question, was the QUEEN set filmed too?

Apologies if I'm behind on this one but I'd be interested to hear if anyone else on the forum has seen this.

My knowledge of hradcore queen facts is so limited that I constantly learn new things. Lynard Skynard toured with Queen, wow? Did the two bands have fiendly relations? Rednecks and pretentious british twats (that was from a review of Innuendo in some news paper posted on Pieter MC's review site, I know we have people who dont speak English as a primary language here and sometimes miss sarcasm). Can you imagine them hanging out? That sounds like a sitcom idea.

i´ve read that roger taylor hates them
that group allegedly made some derogatory comments during their show
i don´t know when that happend but i clearly remember reading that somewhere on the net

Yes, I read that too. It's a shame because I don't think that a lot of people realise quite how good Skynyrd were without having listened to their material for a decent period of time.

After Steve Gaines joined (not too long before the fateful plane crash), their 3-guitar attack was awesome. For those interested, check out Freebird from Oakland Stadium on the 'Freebird The Movie' DVD. Simply jaw dropping.

Anyone have a good 'in' to WDR? It would certainly be worth asking. I can't believe that they wouldn't have filmed the Queen set too but I suppose that particular film may have been re-used and lost forever (as a lot footage in the 70's was).

The April issue of MOJO has a feature on Queen that has drummer Roger Taylor relating a tale of playing shows with Lynyrd Skynyrd in Germany in 1971. (The date is doubtful, see note at bottom.) Taylor says:

"They were awful. They were Southern rednecks and they could not believe it when they saw us four caked in make-up and dressed like women. They were outraged, confused and a little frightened, because the four nancy boys were giving them quite a run for their money on-stage ... God, Lynyrd Skynyrd! They were arseholes, frankly. When they played that song 'Free Bird' it seemed to go for months. As I remember they had three lead guitarists. Hmmm, well we only seemed to need one. Absolute arseholes. Later on they had that terrible fatal plane crash, didn't they? Shouldn't speak ill of the dead ... bollocks to that!"

Yep, I see the crest on the drumhead too! Is it also on the monitor speaker at the front of stage? Interesting indeed. Well, it would be nice, but these kind of things usually blow-up for us Queen fans.

The "Rockpalast" series is pretty popular in germany, and this is the first time I heard of a possible Queen-recording. I once went through their online-archives, to find out about a Police-gig (Hamburg, Markthalle, I think), but being a Queen-Fan, the "Q" is so locked in my head, that I guess, I would've seen it.
Anyway, this is really stunning, and as they are currently re-releasing some of the recordings on DVD it would be sensational, if a Queen-show would see the light of day. Would be a big surprise, though, as no-one ever talked about that possibility. Anyway, I live in Cologne, where WDR is located, so I will do some research and keep you informed.

Excellent Regor, good luck with your investigations! It would be amazing if Queen footage did exist in the archives.

Digging around like this can be a lot of fun. I've managed to find a few 'lost' Zeppelin tapes over the years and I always think its quite a thrill when you actually come across something. Hard work though!
