I still think the footage from the big screens exists!! You have to watch the freddie inserts on the Tribute dvd. There are various shots on there that come from the big screen in Knebworth. For example freddie greeting the audience in armystyle after Bohemian Rhapsody.(I think it is in the third insert)
There is also great footage from GSTQ available from Knebworth. Also from the big screen.

No, this is old news. This whole Knebworth-thing.

*slits wrist*
I have a question concerning the Mannheim concert. This has been taped by the German TV station ZDF? I know that the ZDF used the image of Freddie kicking a ball over the audience and outtakes from other artists as an intro for other ROCKPOP concerts shown on TV. And on the Live Magic video there are several outtakes too.
And The We Are The Champions Broadcast of course.....
What happened to the rest of the footage from that day? Is there any information?

i have a recording of knebworth '86 in a poor video quality, but the sound is quite good.
Here's my thoughts on the issue:
It seems to me that a lot of the concert footage I've seen from the 70's (for instance, the various Kiss videos I have, the Earls Court footage on the Zep DVD, and the Queen Earls Court and Houston shows from 77) seem to originate from video screens.
One suspects that when video screens are used, it's pretty much a common practice to roll videotape on the master feed.
Carrying this line of thinking along, one suspects that there was some type of video recorder hooked up to the master feed for the screens at Knebworth. BUT something went wrong. Either the recording equipment packed up, or something got unplugged somehow, or a cable got trodden on.
But perhaps at some point, someone pulled the videotape taht was SUPPOSED to have the Knebworth footage on it, out of storage (say to consider it for some kind of release or broadcast), and found there was nothing there. Or maybe the image was distorted or otherwise unusuable, due to a low grade signal reaching the recorder.
Just a thought.
I do agree it's a shame there's no proper video of Knebworth. But my guess is, it wasn't a matter of "They didn't record it". I think they probably tried, and the powers that be intervened.
