It is a really good song. I like how Freddie and Billy's voices work together. Very nice. Freddie's itro is fantastic as well.
"Elton John and I became really good friends. I don't mean 'good friends' in that sense. I just mean we slept together." -Billy Joel
Also, if you didn't know, this song is on Freddie's box set. :)

so now i know
Yeah that's my favourite track of the moment a brilliant start by freddie and throughout the track billy squier sings great thruout.

On first hearing it i also thought it was roger taylor's vocals so u are not alone on that theory.

Yep, and ppl it's called "Love is THE hero" for god's sake. lol :)
some of the electronic drums in "Love is the Hero" remind me of the later bits (umm...last pre-chorus?) in "One Vision"

I just got Billy's "Video Hits" DVD today.. one of those budget deals with only 6 videos for $5.88. Anyway, I was surprised to hear Freddie in this version of the song too.. it doesn't have his intro of course, but he's still clearly on background vocals, especially towards the end. It runs 4:44 and there's a bit of a different intro besides just missing the Freddie part.

I had read.. or been told that only the 12" version featured Freddie at all.

It's always been said that Freddie's on the song generally, but features more heavily on the 12". WIth all due respect, maybe you've been selectively reading.
There are a number of different versions/mixes of this track, each featuring different amounts of Freddie in the mix.

Love Is The Hero

LP Version - Capitol CDP 7 46317 2
US 12" 5:22 Extended Promo - Capitol SPRO 9779
UK 7" 4:03 Version - Capitol 5619
US CD Anthology 12" Remix - Reach For The Sky: Chronicles 314 529 296-2

I dare say if someone had access to all four versions, they could create the ultimate - or at least a more - 'Freddie-biased' variation. Unfortunately, although I have the material, I certainly lack the talent.
"Listen to them. Children of the night. What music they make."
