I happen to really like Elton John, but I absolutely hate rap and hip hop!! I won't even dignify them with the title of "music", because they aren't.
As interesting as this could be, I'm really don't understand why he's doing this. Why is he selling out? He's better than that!

It's not really selling out when you're as wealthy as Elton John is. Elton just seems like a really open and inquisitive sort of fellow, and it seems like he has a genuine interest in doing it. That is by no means "selling out," which is a term that is very abused and incorrectly attributed nowadays.

If he has a geniune interest, more power to him. I just can't see any good coming from this. An upper middle aged, white British gay guy is not going to succeed doing hip hop....it's hard enough for white guys of our age bracket to do it. While spreading out into different genres is good, you should understand your limits. It's like the french language rap I heard while I was in France....that language is just not meant for rap. Ever. It sounds very silly, to say the least.
I just hope he doesn't take too big of a hit, fan base wise, for this.

Wouldn't what you're describing - that is, performing for the sole purpose of success, a large fanbase, and monetary gain - be a more apt description of "selling-out," though? To me, art is doing whatever it is you want to do, no matter what it is, with little regard to what anybody says about it or how well it will sell.

Wouldn't what you're describing - that is, performing for the sole purpose of success, a large fanbase, and monetary gain - be a more apt description of "selling-out," though? To me, art is doing whatever it is you want to do, no matter what it is, with little regard to what anybody says about it or how well it will sell.
I don't think it's selling out if he really wants to do it. It's not like he really needs the money nor does he need the notoriety - I get the feeling that he really enjoys the music and wants to try his hand at it. His comments about what R&B artists he's listening to don't seem all that insincere, and it's not like R&B is the latest flash-in-the-pan trend that he's jumping on to create a #1 album.
Of course, I haven't really followed Elton's career (though I do have the essentials, and I'm interested in his new album), but if Bowie can reinvent himself every few years and be hailed as a musical genius, then I'm sure Elton can do something equally as interesting. He acknowledges anyway that it could either be good or it could be a disaster, but as long as he's trying it...

Elton will definitely lose his title as Captain Fantastic by going ahead with this.
It will be a complete disaster but he said himself you don't know until you try so good luck to him but in time he will regret doing this
