I quite like the Darkness. Sometimes they seem to be a parody-band but still cool! Making a good parody also needs talent.
However, I think they resemble more to Boston (e.g. More Than A Feeling) than to Queen.

Has anyone noticed how Justin Hawkins badmouths every single band except Queen?
Too bad he hasn't realized how much his own band sucks. It's just like Spinal Tap, except that Spinal Tap is funny. The Darkness is just pathetic.

Justin's an extraordinary musician, a brilliant guitarist and a very good pianist. But I hate him as a singer and showman.

Let me just say this...
The Darkness is a joke, but they're trying to come across so people take them seriously. That's why they'll never get any respect. Plus Justin Hawkins attitude and constant badmouthing of fellow artists is making things worse.
Spinal Tap is a joke as well, but that was their intention. Spinal Tap was created to lampoon rock bands by adding humor to well known rock star cliches.
Seriously speaking... 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love' might be a fun song to some, but when you think about it, it's just about as dumb as 'Big Bottom.

Whoops. LOL. Apparently I've totally missed their intentions. I thought The Darkness were *trying* to be tongue-in-cheek and kitschy.
Leaving a bar last night, that one hit of theirs was playing. I think it is possible to imitate the lead vocalist if you can accomplish 3 tasks at the same time: Scratching a chalk board the wrong way, strangling your cat, and castrating yourself with a rusty pair of scissors. If all three sounds fall in harmony together, it could very well be fairly close to sounding half as bad as that sound. You might have to add some Rush vocals playing in the background on your stereo.
I keep reading that the singer/Queen comparison is based primarily on his 'Freddie-like' stage persona. That makes me want to see them live, just for a couple of minutes worth of gutlaughing. Can you imagine how ridiculous Freddie would have been had he not had the voice and musical talent alongside of it? Then just imagine if instead, he went the other way, having a voice that makes one cringe with ear pain. This Darkness singer must be the biggest loser in the history of showmanship. Freddie's WAY over the top persona worked because the massive talent within it shifted the perception from ridiculous, campy cheeseball, to eccentric, powerful, musical god. The Darkness guy, by comparison, is more like a real lowly and despicable evangelist.

I'm indifferent to The Darkness. Their sound is very derivative of 70s Rock. I haven't heard anything earth shattering from them but I also don't injure myself trying to change the radio when they're on.
I find the comparisons amusing. Musically they're nothing like Queen. Their videos seem like a tongue in cheek send up. In interviews Justin Hawkins seems a little too big on himself(but then I wasn't really listening so I may have missed something)

You're telling us that Freddie wasn't ridiculous, campy cheeseball with the whole 'God Save the Queen' crown/cape routine(I loved it BTW -- pure entertainment spectacle and full of humour)

Yes, definitely! :) And that's why I like them. Most of my favourites are from the 70's, and the music of The Darkness might be a brilliant style-parody of T.Rex, Led Zeppelin, early Queen (but the piano is always missing!), Boston, Status Quo in a blend.
