I don't understand why there is even a debate...it seems logical that lossless is for sharing and mp3 is for personal use...where is the problem there? No one wants to get a boot that has been circulating amongst 5 or 6 people and losing quality every time!

Most of the FLAC concerts I download that I wish to keep I convert to mp3 for my own personal use IE mp3 player, but I wouldn't share something that I had reduced the quality of because that doesnt seem fair on anyone else who wanted to hear the concert in the best possible quality.
Happy conference to you, Happy conference to you, Happy conference dear punters.... er....and we hope you have stew!

No downloads for you!

The draconian, arian ways of the flac nazis reminds me of Seinfeld's Soup Nazi episode. It astounds me how a few arrogant people can try to determine what people can download, and what format they can share it in.

More astounding is that the flac nazis can detect lossy formats with a frequency analyzer, but instead insist on a total ban of mp3's and blacklisting of those that convert from flac to mp3.

The arrogance of this arien race of flac nazis is unbelievable. They immediately disparrage the intelligence of anyone who downloads, shares or listens to mp3's.

The RIAA already tells me me that I can not listen to bootlegs. I'll be damned If I will let a flac nazi tell me what I can listen to.

The real reason that flac nazis want to shut down mp3 sharing is that it keeps rare stuff rare and maintains the value of their collections.

We gotta kick these fucking nazis.
Hello

Before joining QZ I did not know that FLAC existed, and till then all the music I had was mp3; I would even rip audio CDs to mp3....

Indeed my first audio downloads here were in mp3 but going thru a few interesting "FLAC/Lossless VS mp3/lossy" discussions educated me on the different formats/quality audio is available in. I stopped downloadng mp3 to start with, then started downloading in FLAC when people started sharing those on rapidshare/mediafire.

I have tremendous respect for Sir GH for his knowledge and experience and his no-nonsense posts in discussuions. His reasons for making this a losseless only forum are obviously from the point of view of a trader, however it will also be beneficial for the rest of us fans who are "casual" collectors -

1) the material that is distributed and preserved by the people will be in the best quality possible.
2) according to Sir GH it will also lead to more shows from so far unknown/uncommon sources of recordings to surface. This one reason should be enough for the community to share in losssless.

YourValentine has made it clear that no restrictions would be imposed on the format of material shared here - which is understandable, this forum is supposed to be for all types of people as long as they are Queen fans, and not just for traders. I feel that creating seperate forums for the two formats would not be the correct thing to do - it was rightly pointed out somewhere that it would only mean that Queenzone is OKaying/encouraging lossy shares.

Under the circumstances I believe we should educate each other so that people realise the importance of sharing in high quality. You dont have to know the technicalities, just the purpose, I think.

The sharing people should self-censor. If someone has a particular show in mp3 and wants to share it with the others, they can first post their intention to do so before actually uploading the files, and if someone has the same show in FLAC and is willing to share, they can let the original poster know and share the same. Pleople can download and convert it to whichever format, as long as its for personal use.

Sir GH has mentioned in one of his posts that sharing in rapidshare is not good...or something like that.I would appreciate if anyone could elaborate what he actually meant.

To YV and the other moderators and all the sharers/members - I thank you sooo very much for all the great shares and the (although very few) great discussions you have indulged in on this site. Eventhough I have been a silent spectator (I've been here since 1996 would you believe it?), I've felt like being very much a part of it.

Just appreciating and enjoying the music is not enough, preserving the legacy of the band is also the duty of the true fan.

P Nair

Nope, I definitely didn't say that. The only problem with rapidshare is that you have to take a lot of time between downloads... unless you pay, of course. Other than that, the site is as good as any other.

Otherwise, fantastic post!

Thank you for responding, and for the compliment : )
All it takes is one person to ask for something to be converted to mp3 and shared on rapidshare, and then the recording is ruined.

Just count the number of posts that say, "can someone convert to mp3 and upload it to rapidshare?", because they're too lazy to learn about FLAC and/or bit-torrent.

I was talking about these comments (from another post) but the mistake is mine, I missed the context. I'm sure some people have mentioned that sharing should be done only in torrents, so I guess I got confused.

One more thing Sir GH - obviously you have been a collector for very many years, but your profile says you have been a fan since only 1992. Would like to know the story behaind that, you can post here when you have time -
