J. Geils Band

Anyone like the J. Geils Band? I'm a big fan, as well as Peter Wolf's (J.Geils Band) solo albums.

They made some great songs

Centerfold
Love Stinks
Come Back
Freeze Frame
Give It To Me
Angel In Blue
My personal favorite song of their's is 'Do You Remember When?'

And it's funny that the band broke up when they reached the high point of their career (the album Freeze Frame was on the top of the charts).... and then they split, after like 15 or so years of working together.

J. Geils Band is pretty good. I prefer their early '80s singles "Centerfold" and "Freeze Frame".

Do you top-40 listeners even KNOW that they were originally a really good BLUES-band?

I knew it. When they were a blues band their music didn't make the top 40. My local radio station has been playing their early stuff though. It's weird because their concerts were big yet the singles didn't chart so well, as it wasn't live, and they've been said to have been a better live band than studio band. Peter Wolf wanted the band to go in the pop direction while Seth Justman, the bands keyboardist, wanted to stay in the blues direction. Something like that at least.

Yeah, and Wolf won, leading to a short burst of success, but followed by a long period of unoriginal music, sadly.

Yeah. He had a great solo album, "Lights Out", but everything after that seemed like it was all not him. It didn't have the groove that he usually put into music. A lot of his songs lacked the radio friendly part of the songs, and seemed kind of slow. His last album 'Sleepless', which I haven't bought yet, but have heard, lacks the 'Lights Out' radio friendly music.

Bryan Adams did the same thing with his latest album 'Room Service'.. it's slow, missing the gigantic guitar solos and radio friendly rock tracks.


I really like Peter's solo song called "Here Comes That Hurt".......

Correct. One big hit and this bands star faded.......

Ok, folks... educate me.  What's the best J Geils Band record?  Preferably from their non-commercial blues phase..

'Bloodshot' for studio, 'Blow Your Face Out' for a live performance.

Boston based, yet parts/all of their three live albums were recorded in Detroit.

I like/love/ 'hate' them.  My older cousins were fans, alt radio in Michigan played them a lot, great party music.  Warmed up to their 'pop' stuff.  'Just Can't Wait/Come Back' is a great 'two fer', and 'Walls Come Tumbling Down' was fun to sing to at parties after a drink or ten.

The bad:  four of us froze our arses waiting in line for eight hours to purchase 40.....yes, 40 tickets to see them in 1980.  10 tix 2nd row, 15 in the 3rd and 4th rows, all center seats.  Day of the concert, we grab the kegs, I boil up enough pasta and other goodies for baked deep dishes to feed us all, and as we're getting ready to eat our preconcert meal.........they cancel due to Peter Wolf throat problems.

They never rescheduled.

We were not amused.

Can't stand them.

Thanks, Bob.........yeah, it was quite the bummer.   There is also a PM regarding this and other odds n sods. 

If only they had come back through Michigan at the end of that tour.

Please post a response on this thread as to your likes/dislikes concerning the band once you've heard them once or twice during the evening weekend hours (that's when they sound or fit the best)
